Lead is a toxic heavy metal that was used extensively in paint and coatings prior to its ban in 1977. It is specifically dangerous to children due to the fact that they are developing and lead poisoning can cause nervous system and organ damage as well as many other complications.

Homes built before the 1980’s should be checked for lead if small children are present as it is more than likely that lead paint is present.
